Obituary of George Washington Burson
Died on the 24th Aug 1884, Elder G. W. Burson, an aged, highly esteemedminister of the gospel. The deceased was born in Gwinnette County, Ga.July 26, 1813, and departed this life at the age of 71 years, and 29days, leaving the wife of his youth with whom he had lived 51 years and 7days, and six children to mourn his departure, but their mourning isturned to joy by the assurance that the devoted husband and father "isnot dead, but sleepeth", and that the spirit enjoys the rich reward of thefinally faithful. Elder G. W. Burson was well known by many in middleand south Georgia, and also in this portion of the state, having removedfrom Randolph Co., Georgia., to this county in the winter of 1854. Hisreligious life began in 1845 when on August the 5th he united with theBaptist Church, was ordained to the ministry in November 1854. Thegreater part of his ministerial labors have been in this part of Ga. andthe neighboring counties of Alabama. As a minister of the gospel, he wasfaithful to the trust committed to him, never failing to fulfill everyengagement, except when providentially hindered. As an evidence of thelove and esteem which he held among his brethren and also, theirconfidence in him, as a man of more than ordinary executive ability, hewas for a number of years, the chosen moderator of the ArbacoocheeAssociation, and later, also for two years, the moderator of theCarrollton Association, and although he had become somewhat infirm, byreason of affliction, yet his zeal was not abated, having often expressedhis desire that when the Master should call, that he be found standing inhis lot and place and that his desire was granted, for not withstandinghis feeble health, he was serving as pastor for two churches, Shiloh andHowie's Grove in Alabama. He had just closed an interesting meeting afew days before, with the former and commenced a series of meetings withthe latter. When on Sunday evening, after having preached with the usualpower at the 11 o'clock services, attended the evening prayer meeting, during the service, he felt that the summons had come. He was carriedfrom the church to the house of a neighbor near by, and with firm andunfaltering trust, worded his last message to his wife, to meet him inglory, and with a mind calm and serene, he conversed accordingly, as hisstrength afforded him, with the friends around his bed, repeating at last" I have fought a good fight. I have kept the faith, hence-forth thereis a crown laid up for me.", then closing his own eyes in death, andceased to breathe, speaking in the last moment, the words,"BlessedJesus", and his spirit departed. The body was removed and carried backto his home, and on Tuesday following was buried at Bethlehem Church inthe presence of a large assembly, whose hearts beat in sympathy with thebereaved family. "The righteous that hope in his death." The funeralservice was conducted by the writer..........W. W. Roop
